Teradata Corporation is pleased to announce the availability of new Teradata Express versions based on our recently released version 14.0 of the Teradata database. The Teradata Express program is a freely licensed virtual instance of the Teradata database. It is fully functional for evaluation, test and development purposes.

1. What does Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware include?

Teradata Express14.0 for VMware includes the following:

  • Teradata Database 14.00.00.01
  • Teradata Tools and Utilities 14.0
  • Teradata Viewpoint 14.0 (installed, but inactive by default)
  • Teradata Studio Express

There are 3 different images available that have different database sizes (4 GB, 40GB, and 1 TB). The images are 64 bit SUSE Linux 10 SP 3. They are configured as a 2 AMP SMP. The username and password are root / root.

2. What are the differences between Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware and Teradata Database 14.0?

  • Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware is restricted to the 3 different database sizes whereas the production Teradata 14.0 can scale as large as you like. The VM defaults to 1 GB memory.
  • All features are enabled, including Columnar Partitioning, Row Level Security, Temporal, etc.
  • Learn about all of the new Teradata 14.0 features via Teradata Education Network training.
  • There is no upgrade path from previous versions of Teradata Express as is found with Teradata Database. Each new Teradata Express you download is a fresh instance of the database.
  • Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware uses underlying host system files for the database storage instead of raw disk partitions.

3. What are the hardware requirements for Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware?

Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware is a Linux version of the Teradata Database and may be hosted on a number of 64-bit platforms including Linux and Windows. Minimum system requirements: x64 CPU, 2 GB memory.

  • The images require the following free space for installation:
    • 4GB requires 13GB disk space
    • 40GB requires 18GB disk space
    • 1TB requires 35GB disk space

  • To run the Viewpoint tool the following Memory sizes must be allocated to VMware.
    • 4GB requires 2.0GB Memory
    • 40GB requires 2.5GB Memory
    • 1 TB requires 4.0GB Memory

The VMware® web site provides a Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility tool. This can be used to verify that the system is 64 bit. You can download the tool here.

There is also a BIOS setting to enable virtualization. Instructions to turn on hardware virtualization in a PC BIOS are specific to OEM models. It is important that after changing the BIOS settings the PC is completely shut down at the power switch before restarting so that the new BIOS settings can take place.

4. What are the software requirements for Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware?

Minimum 64-Bit system requirements:

  • Microsoft Windows (XP, 7, Vista)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS X. Must use VMware Fusion from VMware. (Not free)

VMware Software:

  • VMware Player on Windows or Linux hosts
  • VMware Workstation on Linux or Windows hosts
  • VMware Fusion on Mac OS X
  • VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion are licensed products. VMware Player can be freely downloaded here

5. What other software do I need?

  • The VMware image was compressed using 7-zip, which can be downloaded for various platforms here.
    • For Mac OS X, we recommend using the Keka tool to unzip.

6. How do I get Teradata Express 14.0 for VMware?

Visit the Teradata Express for VMware download page.

Please note that Teradata Express for VMware is not an officially supported product. However, for unofficial community support, please visit the Database or Cloud Computing forums.

Not yet. We're finalizing the 4GB and the 1TB versions and will be doing a refresh of the 40GB in a couple of days.

When will the Teradata Express 14.0 Tool and Utilities for Windows be available?

Can the images be made to work with VirtualBox? Free version of VB has features that are not available unless one upgrades to paid version of VMWare Workstation.

The images will run with VirtualBox. However, some configuration work will need to be done such as mapping the disks to the appropriate controllers.

For anyone trying to run this image using VBox, I was able to run the image after I uninstalled VMWare tools and installed VBox guest additions in its place.

How does patching work with Suse Linux Enterprise Server if someone needs to patch the server? Does the subscription fall under the agreement Teradata has with Suse or is the individual required to purchase this separately?

These free images are for evaluation only. They are not intended to be patched or updated by users. We will periodically release updated images if necessary.

Hi Guys,

Did anyone try to get this working with Virtual Box on MAC? If so can anyone suggest me how to go about it?

Here are short instructions for VirtualBox:
1) Create VM, attach lsilogic scsi controller, attach disks to it in the following order:
scsi0:0.fileName = "Disk sda.vmdk"
scsi0:1.fileName = "Disk sdb.vmdk"
scsi0:2.fileName = "Disk sdc.vmdk"
scsi0:3.fileName = "Disk sdd.vmdk"
scsi0:4.fileName = "Amp0-Pdisk0.
scsi0:5.fileName = "Amp1-Pdisk0.vmdk"
scsi0:6.fileName = "LS10_TD1310_01_4GB.vmdk"
2) Boot it, choose FailSafe mode;
3) Uninstall vmware-tools with vmware-tools-uninstall.pl, reboot, boot to normal mode;
4) Run YAST, remove VMware network adapter in Network Card config.
5) If you want to connect to it from host OS (with Teradata Studio or SQLA) - in VirtualBox attach to VM host-only adapter.
Done.

I fully appreciate that the VMWare images are SuSE Linux. But we have a requirement to run Teradata Express on Red hat / Cent OS for some testing. Cliff L do you know if this is technically possible? Obviously we'd have to engage properly with Teradata to take this further forward.

Inside the image is Suse Linux, but TD Express as a package runs on top of VMware Player. There are VMware Player images for Linux here:

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0

If you are asking if Teradata can run on top of Red Hat / Cent o/s, then the answer is no.

Hi,

I am using the software from 7ZIP.org and still getting problems unzipping it. The error goes something like "cannot open /filename.7z as archive" , I have downloaded both the 4GB and 40GB version atleast 3 times and it still gives me the same issue. Please assist on this asap.

Thanks'

Can you ping the IP address? Does a different browser work (like IE)?

I have installed the 40GB image of TD Express 14.0 for VMware , using VMware Player 5.0.0 build-812388. It has 2.5GB memory, as recommended. The database is running, but many operations are painfully slow. For instance, from the time I enter "bteq" at the command line to the time bteq comes back with "Teradata BTEQ for Linux...Enter your logon or BTEQ command" is 20 seconds! TD Studio Express takes 1 min 35 sec to start and is very slow thereafter as well. Surely this can't be normal?...

I tried the 40gb version on a laptop with 4gb of memory and had the same issue. There was a lot of memory paging going on. I switched to the 4gb version and everything works ok. It requires 2gb of memory vs 2.5 for the 40gb version, if I remember right it's due to the Viewpoint requirements in the image.

The 40gb version works ok on another laptop I have with 8gb of memory.

I think you're right, Bruce. The 4GB version seems fine. (My laptop has 6GB of RAM.)

If you are not using Viewpoint, try turning it off from the desktop icon in the VM. The Viewpoint services take a lot of resources.

I'm running the 40gb version on a 16gb laptop with a SSD drive. It's extremely slow like others reported. Strangely, there's very little CPU and disk activity, so I don't see any bottlenecks.

Don't know if this will work or not. Try increasing the virtual RAM to 4 GB in the Virtual Machine Settings for VMware Player. Let us know if that helps.

Also, since you have enough physical resources in the laptop, you could try the 1 TB version. It has bigger RAM.

I installed TD Express 14 for VM Player. But there are no databases. Not even DBC visible in Studio. All that I have on the desktiop is Teradata Tools, Start/Stop Viewpoint, Teradata Studio.
Thanks.

I had the same issue with 1TB.

I tried to modify the Network Card and add the hostname and domain name, it seems to resolve the issue. Give it a try.

Cheers!

The error you list is linux looking for a sound card. This error started happening to me and I have no idea why it started.
Try shutting down firefox and starting viewpoint services and try again.
To start Viewpoint services, go to the linux prompt and run the following command.
/etc/init.d/viewpoint start
Let me know what happens.

I would like to use this TD Express to set up a box in our labs in order to run automated tests of our software against Teradata. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the licence agreement of this version, particularly about the grant during 90 days only. Please note that I absolutely have no need to keep the data indefintely as they will be recreated from scratch regularly (even a re-initialization of the VM is fine with my needs).
Can anyone clarify the licence agreement in my case since I'm not evaluating the software but using it for tests purpose?

You will need to download another copy to initiate another 90 day period.
