Teradata Studio 14.02 is now available for download. Teradata Studio is an administration tool for creating and administering database objects. It can be run on multiple operating system platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. It is built on top of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) which allows Teradata Studio Express to benefit from the many high quality Eclipse features available while focusing on value-add for the Teradata Database.

What's New:

  • Aster Database Support

Support is provided for Teradata’s Aster Database. Users can create connections for an Aster Database using the Aster Connection Profile Wizard. The Data Source Explorer will display Aster Databases, Schemas, Tables, Views, and Map Reduce Functions. SQL Templates are provided to help users create Aster SQL commands. SQL statements can be executed against an Aster Database, with result set data displayed in the Result Set Viewer and history entries stored in the Teradata SQL History. The Teradata View also supports the display of more detailed information about Aster Database objects.

  • Collect Statistics

The Collect Statistics Wizard provides a user interface to help users perform COLLECT STATISTICS operations on tables and columns in Teradata Database 14.0 and higher. The user can select a table or column in the Data Source Explorer and choose the Collect Statistics option. The Statistics View is opened where the user can specify additional information for statistics collection and choose the columns for single or multi stats collection.

  • Data Lab Support (Smart Load, Copy Table)

Teradata Data Lab provides the DBA the flexibility to provision space within the data warehouse. Teradata Studio provides an option for Data Lab customers to easily load data from an Excel or CSV file (Smart Load) as well as copy tables from their Teradata system into their Data Lab. Tables can be dragged from the Data Source Explorer and dropped in the Data Lab View, invoking the Data Lab Copy Table wizard. The Copy Table wizard will copy the table in addition to the table data to the Data Lab. A filtering option is provided to filter out unwanted columns or certain data within the columns. The Smart Load option is provided by selecting the Tables folder within the Data Lab.

  • Enhanced DDL Generator

The DDL Generator has been enhanced to provide better options and DDL generation for Schemas, Tables, Views, Macros, Indexes, Stored Procedures, User Defined Functions, and User Defined Types.

  • Excel 2007 (.xlsx) Support

Support for Excel 2007 (.xlsx) has been added when exporting table data or result set data to Excel. Previously, only Excel 97-2003 was supported. This allows users to export over 65,536 rows of data to an Excel spreadsheet.

  • Hadoop Data Transfer

Teradata Studio 14.02 provides a feature to easily transfer tables and data from Hadoop to Teradata (Import) and from Teradata to Hadoop (Export). The Hadoop Transfer Perspective allows users to drag Teradata tables from the Data Source Explorer and drop them on the Database node in the Hadoop View and visa versa, drag tables from the Hadoop view and drop them on the Tables folder in the Data Source Explorer. Users can also right click on a Teradata table and choose the option in the Data menu, Export to Hadoop. Or right click on the Tables folder in the Data Source Explorer and choose the Teradata menu option Import from Hadoop. A dialog is opened to help you map the Teradata columns to Hadoop column types or Hadoop columns to Teradata column types.  A transfer job is started and, when completed, its status is displayed in the Transfer History View. Users must create a connection profile for the Hadoop database, providing the profile name, HCatalog hostname, port number, system username and password.

In order to use the Hadoop Data Transfer feature, users must enable the option by setting the Data Transfer Preference 'Enable Hadoop Views'. Refer to the Teradata Studio Help for more information on this feature.

  • Quick Tour Help Option

When bringing up Teradata Studio for the first time, a Quick Tour slide show is presented to help the user familiarize themselves with the basic features of Teradata Studio.

  • Result Set Viewer Performance Improvement

Performance improvements have been made to the Result Set Viewer to significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to display the result set data.

  • Teradata Load and Export

Teradata Load and Export provides an enhanced load and export feature to quickly load or export the data to and from tables within the Data Source Explorer. The Teradata Load feature will use criteria such as number of rows, column types, and existing table data to determine whether the Teradata JDBC FastLoad option will be used, otherwise JDBC batch operations are performed. Teradata Load and Export support both Excel 97-2003 .xls and Excel 2007 .xlsx file formats.

Filtering has also been added to the Teradata Export wizard. The user can choose to filter out certain columns, as well as filter out certain data within a column.

  • Upgrade Eclipse 3.7.2 and DTP 1.10.1

This release of Teradata Studio has upgraded its version of Eclipse to version 3.7.2 and its version of Eclipse Data Tools Platform to 1.10.1.

Looks like the bug whereby edit and sometimes Show DDL on stored procedures and UDF's don't fully return all the info still exists on the Mac OS X version. Seems to work fine on Windows...

Otherwise, it's much faster. Thanks for the update!!

@tdgi, I was not able to recreate your problem on the Mac OS X. So, can you tell me more about the SP or UDF you are having problems with? Is it a SQL, C, or Java UDF/SP? How many lines of SQL is it? Can you display the UDF/SP in the Teradata View and click on the SQL and Source tabs. Is it displayed correctly? Is there any exceptions in the Error Log? Thanks.

Is there a way to order the databases and users like we see them in TD Administrator? In hierarchical form instead of just listing every user and database on the system in alphabetical order? If this tool is to ultimately replace the existing TD administrator that is one feature it really needs to have. It makes it much easier to move between the different objects when I can collapse all my users under the parent DB and not have to look through them unless i want to.

A hierarchical view will be available in the next release; 14.10. The release has not been committed but early 3rd Q is the target.

I had to change permissions on the installation directory (chmod 755) in order to launch the app as no-root user.
Cheers.

This is probably a stupid question. I'm brand-new to Teradata (currently support several large Oracle environments).

Is the Studio tool and "single install" on Windows that doesn't require ANY other pre-reqs installed? We have previously installed the TTU suite for version 14 and it's a major pain the you-know-what. I have installed Studio, but that was after I had installed TTU.

thanks,
Ken

Yes, it just requires the Java Runtime Environment, version 1.6 or greater.

Hello, I installed Teradata Studio 14.02 to see the new Data Lab Options, but in the 'Teradata Data Lab' View the first thing to do is 'Select Profile'. What is it?.

I get a message that only an ET or a NULL statement is allowed after DDL.  I tried changing the TMODE to TERA and DEFAULT, but no luck.
Any ideas?

If you are trying to execute multiple SQL statements with DDL statements you will need to 'Execute As Individual Statements'. Choose this option in the SQL Editor context menu (right click). From the Help...

  • Execute as Individual Statements - This option will execute all of the statements or selected statements one at a time, displaying the result as a Teradata Group Execution in the SQL Results view. This option will allow a user to execute DDL statements, which requires its own commit between statements. The group result will include an individual SQL Result for each statement.

I'm just all kinds of trouble now that I'm using Studio so much... It's a great improvement over 14.0.1.
When I open the PDCRDATA database and look for Indexes, I don't find any, like I do in WinDDI.  When I open the DBQLogTbl_Hst, I see an index,  but it won't let me show the DDL, and the Generate DDL basically gives an empty XML tag.

For a table index, in most cases the index was created in the CREATE TABLE statement. Do a show DDL on the table. Indexes at the Schema or Database level are Join or Hash Indexes.

Hi Francine; After attending your Midwest TUG conference yesterday, I was able to get the tool installed on Windows 7 runing JRE 7; however, when I attempt to run a Move Space, the tool locks up on me. I then downgraded to JRE 6 to see if that would solve the issue and still no go.
Is there a trick to getting this feature to work? We are evaluating the tool to determine if this should replace other tools that the developers are utilizing.
Thanks,
Brett B.

Brett, I am assuming you can enter the values in the Move Space dialog and it hangs when you press the Move Space button. Under the covers, we are running SQL that creates a temporary database under the "From Schema",  giving that temporary database the space, then dropping the temporary database. Are there any permissions issues for that database (which should show an error) or any locks on the database you are trying to move space from that would cause the SQL to hang?

Francine;
Unfortunately, I don't even get the Move Space dialog. I select a schema then select Move Space and the application just hangs, stops responding and I can't do anything other than closing the application.

The Move Space dialog does attempt to get the list of databases by running a query of the Data Dictionary, as it creates the composite for the dialog.  Are you running with the ViewsX or ViewsVX preference enabled? Are there any other permission issues?

The tool is setup to use the View and ViewV and I am connecting to Teradata 12 database. As far as permissions, I am able to select from the DBC.Views and ViewsV, so permissions should not be an issue. I have a DBA profile that has been configured to administer the system and can do just about everything in Teradata Administrator.

The error logs may should something. The teradata.log is located in your workspace-studio/.metadata/Teradata directory. There is also an Eclipse log (.log) located in the workspace-studio/.metdata directory. Can you open a Teradata Studio Forum topic and attach your error logs?

Hi Francine; I went and opened a forum topic, but did find in the logs the following error: com.teradata.jdbc.jdbc_4.util.JDBCException: [Teradata Database] [TeraJDBC 14.00.00.21] [Error 3807] [SQLState 42S02] Object 'DBC.Hw_Event_Log' does not exist. Based on this, looked at the database and it appears that there is a view in DBC called Hardware_Event_Log that attempts to select from the DBC.Hw_Event_Log, however, it is not in any of our databases or is not viewable to me.

Any thoughts?

Hi Francine,
When I double click in history, I get popped in to a SQL Editor tab.  But I can't run from there.  I checked and I can run from SQL Editor 1 (although I don't remember how I got that SQL in there), but not 2 or 3.  Scrapbooks work fine.
Thanks.

If you double click on the SQL Statement column in the Teradata SQL History, it will open the SQL in a SQL Editor window. If the connection associated with that SQL is closed, the context menu execute options are not enabled. Re-connect that connection profile and the execute options will be enabled, or you can choose a different connection profile, from the Type drop down at the top, to execute the SQL. By the way, we are working on making the SQL Editor easier to use in out next release. :-)

Hi Francine,
I tried today the new Hadoop Transfer. What works:

  • I could create a Hadoop profile
  • I can connect to the Hadoop cluster and can see the databases and tables exposed in HCatalog
  • I can see the structure of the tables in Hadoop
  • I can call the "import from Hadoop" and "export to Hadoop" wizards (using a connection to a TD 13.10 database)
  • The wizards let me configure, what is needed ..

What does not work

  • The transfer jobs started by the wizards fail immediately with the message

  • Could not find the main class: com.teradata.hadoop.tool.TeradataImportTool.  Program will exit.
  • respecively
  • Could not find the main class: com.teradata.hadoop.tool.TeradataExportTool.  Program will exit.

Could it be, that my Studio 14.02 version is missing a library?

Thanks for your help

There is at least one file missing from your Hadoop system that is required. The following files need to be in your Hadoop's lib directory (/usr/lib/hadoop/lib):

  • teradata-hadoop-connector-1.0.5.jar -- this is the file that contains the TeradataImportTool and TeradataExportTool classes.
  • tdgssconfig.jar -- a Teradata JDBC jar
  • terajdbc4.jar -- another JDBC jar

These files are not distributed as part of Studio.

Thanks Chuck,
This explains the error. I was not aware, that Teradata Studio needs server side installations for the Hadoop Transfer to work.
We have a TD Big Analytics 3H appliance with HDP 1.1 as Hadoop cluster. I just have created a request to customer support to get information, if we can install the library and if installing it will void any support on the appliance.
Thanks again

Beat@, Here is what is supported, as noted in the Teradata Studio Readme:
Hadoop Configuration Support:
=============================
Teradata Studio provides an option to transfer data to and from Hadoop systems using the Teradata Hadoop Connector
version 1.0.6. The Teradata Hadoop Connector is installed on the Hadoop node. The following are the requirements
of the Teradata Hadoop Connector:

    System
        JRE/JDK 1.6

    Supported Teradata Database versions

        Teradata Database 13.0
        Teradata Database 13.10
        Teradata Database 14.0

Supported Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) versions

        HDP 1.1.0.17 (Hadoop 1.0.3, Hive 0.9.0, HCatalog 0.4.0)
        HDP 1.0.0.12 (Hadoop 1.0.3, Hive 0.9.0, HCatalog 0.4.0)

Thanks Francine,
yes, we have a TD 3H appliance with HDP 1.1.0.17. In my opinion, all prerequisites are met. So it should work.
If Chuck is right, the Teradata Hadoop Connector library is missing (or not accessible) on the server side.  As far as I know, this is a Cloudera library, which therefore might not automativally be in the HDP distribution.
Can you confirm, that this server side component is supposed to be part of the HDP 1.1.0.17 ? Where would it be located?
Thanks
Beat

How can I enable a hierarchical schema via similar to the TD Admin tool?
It seems the very long list of Schemas without the inherent grouping of the DB hierarchy makes it a bit hard to keep an overview.
Any way to adjust the Data Source Explorer's view?

Hi,
why is 'Smart Loader Wizard' not available if you do not use Data-Lab?
Creating a table from file structure could be of interest for developers (outside of data-lab environments)
Thanks

@Michael Rieder, The database hierarchical display has been fixed in our next release, 14.10, planned for release in Q3. You can Filter the list of Schemas (Databases) displayed in the Schemas folder. Right click on the Schemas folder and choose the Properties menu option. Uncheck the 'Disable filter' box, then choose an expression or select the schemas you wish to display.

@roy_nimmagadda, You can download Teradata Express. Refer to the Download Page (http://downloads.teradata.com/download).
The server name is the name or IP address of your Teradata Server. The username field is your Teradata Database User name. You can click on the '?' for help with the Connection Profile Wizard fields.

I just installed Teradata studio and able to use Teradata load and extract features but  am trying to use smart load but can't find one.

Is there a constraint in using smart load ie only when Data Lab env is avaialble ? or how do we use this feature to load excel file into TD database.

Thanks

Hello Francine,
Perhaps its useful bringing an incident concerning security hole that I just created with TDCS concerning TD Studio Express.
Hello,
Issue no1.: We have found out that the password is stored in plain text in DBQLogTbl when the password expires and the user is prompted to change it and the user is using Teradata Studio Express.
Our query logging rules:
User    Account    By Application Name:    SQL Length    What to Log
All            2000    Explain  Objects  SQL  Step Information
We reproduced the problem:
1. Logon as a user (lets say user is wzhkfj) wzhkfj in any tool.
2. issue: modify user wzhkfj as password=abc123 for user;
3. Logoff
4. Logon in teradata studio express as user wzhkfj
5. When prompted set the new password to "thisisbad"
6. After DBQL is flushed, issue: select * from dbc.dbqlogtbl where session=sessionid;

This does not happen when user manually encloses the pw in double qoutes.

Issue no2.: It is also not possible to change expired password to a password which contains special characters or starts with a number without manually enclosing the pw in double quotes.

Assumption: TD Studio Express should automatically enclose the pw in double qoutes.

We used latest version 14.02 of TD Studio Express

Very good article really helps me lot.
My question: I have installed the Teradata Studio 14.0 version for our Data Lab users and users are not able to view there Labs in the Teradata Data Lab Window even though they are assigned to the Data lab group.
Is there any other settings required in viewpoint or Studio?
Appreciate your response.

@Sunnyguy4Tera, The Data Lab is configured via Viewpoint. In Teradata Studio, you will need to create a connection profile to the system that contains the Data Lab, using the Connection Profile Wizard. Refer to the Teradata Studio article (http://developer.teradata.com/tools/articles/teradata-studio). There is a section describing how to create a connection profile. Once you have a connection profile and connect to the system with the Data Lab, it should show up in the Select Profile list of the Data Lab View. If the Data Lab is still not showing up, then I would look at the permissions set for the Data Lab.

There is no maximum number of rows. It will warn you when you've reached the maximum display row count, but you can ignore and display all rows. But you may run out of memory, as you have discovered in the internal error. You should increase the memory values in the TeradataStudio.ini file (located in your install directory). Currently a value of 256 is set. You should bump this up to at least 512.
If your intent is not to display all 307K rows, which I doubt you would want to do, then you can also opt to Export the data using the Teradata Export option Export does not attempt to display the rows.
