Teradata Viewpoint 14.01 Release
This article is the official release announcement for Teradata Viewpoint/CAM 14.01 with an effective release date of October 12th, 2012. There are some great new features, in particular enhancements for usability, supportability, administration, and extensions to monitoring capabilities. We here at Teradata are really psyched with everything we brought you in this exciting TENTH Viewpoint release! Aligned with this release is also a new release of Teradata Data Lab 14.01. The primary themes of the Viewpoint 14.01 release are Teradata Aster monitoring, portlet resizing, and simplified high availability (HA) clustering but there is also new feature content for administrative aspects and monitoring features. Browser support has been updated to reflect support for Firefox 13, Chrome 19, Safari 5.1, IE 8.x and 9.x (no support for IE 6.x or 7.x versions). For localization, we now offer Simplified Chinese in addition to Japanese, to be released in December. If you have other Teradata solution portlets running in your environment, you should review the Viewpoint 14.01 consideration.
Viewpoint's single operational view (SOV) monitoring has been extended to include support for Teradata Aster! As you will see, this was no lightweight implementation either. Planning this integration, Teradata wanted to leverage as many of the existing portlets as possible for easier navigation, familiarity, and support for the Viewpoint SOV strategy. So the following existing portlets were extended to include support for Aster:
- Admin - Teradata Systems
However not all the needs of Teradata Aster's differing architecture made sense to put into an existing portlet. Therefore there are two new Aster specific portlets in this release.
- Aster Completed Processes
- Aster Node Monitor
Integration into existing portlets do have differences for Aster however. For instance, the System Health portlet provides easy identification at the summary view with the new Aster symbol and then a similar but different set of metrics in the drill down:
Similarly, you will see different metrics for Teradata Aster in the Capacity Heatmap, Metrics Analysis, and Metrics Graph portlets. Query Monitor and Space Usage portlets offer differing report options and columns to display as shown below with Query Monitor.
The new Aster specific portlets addressed process monitoring and Aster's node architecture. Here is the summary and detailed drill down Aster Completed Processes portlet screens. Notice the SQL and Explain tabs which like Query Monitor offer export functionality.
And here is the Aster Node Monitor portlet. Notice the hardware statistics tab leverages the Metrics Analysis portlet architecture including the new metrics export option.
This feature shows much better on a large flat panel than it does in a DevX article. For those of you frustrated with Viewpoint and the amount of white space on your large monitors or flat panels, Viewpoint 14.01 will provide the long awaited relief you have been waiting for. Viewpoint remains a two column layout but the columns can now be resized / supersized using the drag handle (shown as double dashed lines). We do maintain a minimum size for a column however although we continue to support maximize if you want a portlet to utilize the entire dashboard. Here's a view of the drag handle within the two column architecture.
A related change to the new resizing capability is new visualization and initialization behavior for the ''rewind" bar. An example is shown below in the HA clustering section.
In the Viewpoint 14.01 release, HA clustering (Viewpoint and CAM combined) has become easier to implement, monitor, and extended in its automation aspects. As documented in the Viewpoint Configuration Guide, setting up a Viewpoint HA cluster is now as easy as running the new command-line tool that runs in just a few minutes. The command-line tool performs the following operations:
- Asks a few simple questions about what hosts will comprise the cluster
- Verifies that the software versions and times on the server match
- Stops all the Viewpoint services in the cluster
- Performs the necessary aspects for clustering
- Restarts all Viewpoint services in the cluster
Once command-line tool completes, the setup of the standby Viewpoint server is handled automatically in the background with progress displayed in the new Viewpoint Notification Banner. The new banner, by default, is only displayed to Admin users although can be permissioned in the Roles Manager for other roles if desired. It will report that the setup is percentage complete, completed, or failed at a percentage. Here is the banner showing a progress percentage complete.
Other items worth noting on HA clustering:
- Use the same command line tool for recovering a HA cluster after a promotion operation
- Clustering WAN performance is improved as we leverage new record-based streaming replication
- Automatic promotion is available for all failure scenarios including protection from network glitches
There are a number of ease-of-use enhancements to Viewpoint administration in this release. The first of these allows for an existing alerting infrastructure to be copied to another Teradata system. So instead of having to manually recreate alerts from scratch, you can now copy an existing alert setup to another Teradata system. This new feature can be found in the Admin - Teradata Systems - Alerts menu. There is a new "copy alerts" icon (circled) that brings up a list of Teradata systems to copy to as shown below.
There is a new configuration aspect for the System Health portlet to protect summary system health conditions from system CPU or I/O skews. This new setting can be found in the Admin - Teradata Systems - System Health menu, in the same location where one can adjust system health thresholds, system health threshold activation states, customize health condition status' and related tooltips. Below is a modified view showing all these options. The Viewpoint collection process requires that specific macros be available to run console utilities and that the collection user has the correct privileges on the Teradata System. Previously these privileges were documented in the Viewpoint configuration guide and had to be manually input. The necessary grants are now documented in the Admin - Teradata Systems - General menu for easy setup, test, or review. With the Grant selection, you have a Continue option that, after confirming your Teradata credentials, executes the grants for you.
Although not new functionality, adding a user interface for setting the system default "Locale" and "Session Timeout" not only makes it easier to perform these operations but eliminates the need to login into Linux directly. These items are found in the new Admin - Viewpoint Config menu under the General tab. The system locale is used to enable the Japanese and Simplified Chinese localizations. Session timeout is the security setting to automatically expire idle Viewpoint sessions.
The final administrative enhancement is the addition of a Certificates option, as shown in the Admin - Viewpoint Config menu above. This allows management of trusted certificate authorities (CA) and HTTPS certificates.
Some additional monitoring enhancements have been added to Viewpoint 14.01. The first of these is extension of the export capability to the trend and metrics portlets allowing this data to be pulled out of Viewpoint. Export is already available for portlets leveraging the data grid, for SQL, Explain, and Viewpoint user information. Export has now been implemented in the Capacity Heatmap, Metrics Graph, Metrics Analysis, Viewpoint Monitoring portlets as well as the Hardware Statistics drill down in the Aster Node Monitor portlet. Here is an example showing the export icon in the top right corner of the Metrics Analysis portlet.
Another feature extension is the addition of the "Update Space" operation within the Remote Console portlet. A description of what it does is included in the execution screen as shown below.
As some of the foundational software has been upgraded to enable new features, other solution portlets will need to be upgraded at the time as the Viewpoint 14.01 upgrade. See below for other solution minimum versions necessary for compatibility with Viewpoint 14.01:
